To Istanbul artist's book

Client: Self-initiated Project
Scope: Book Design · Book Binding · Silkscreen Printing · Sewing · Packaging Design

I created these four artists’ books about life in Istanbul. The books all have the same screen-printed inserts, each focussing on a different person’s perspective of the City. I wanted to convey the feel of the place with it's rich heritage and culture, cosmopolitan outlook and strong textiles industry.

The illustrations and patterns were inspired by elaborately decorated Koran and historic artifacts I viewed in the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art and around the City. I used simple materials and processes to produce the books with bold motifs printed in black, overlaid with bright, contemporary, colourful patterns. The books are the size of a standard modern Koran and are displayed on hand screen-printed travel cushions, inspired by Ottoman Koran reading frames.
