Although the 2020 college baseball season was cut short, that doesn't mean there weren't moments worth celebrating this year. Both College of Charleston's and Michigan State's baseball teams were off to a hot starts, the latter kicking off their season at Shipyard Park in Charleston.

I had not shot a baseball game in about 5 years until this spring, but it was among my favorite times shooting photos -- albeit for only a handful of games. This collection includes top photos for both teams in their respective 2020 games.

These images were used across social, web, and print content -- and ended up being among the only for 2020. Check them out below!

Stories told before the first pitch:

As with any sport, there are plenty of scenes to capture before the real action starts. Pregame presents a great chance to mix and match + great creative with shots.

Game time:

Any chance the photos can seize on the emotion of the game, take it. The moment will only last a few seconds, at best, but they make for the best photos.

One of my favorite things about shooting baseball is the variety of angles and focal lengths you can take and still capture quality scenes. There's always a story to be told on the diamond.

Can't ever underestimate the small moments outside of play in the minutiae of the game.

Unlike indoor sports, there was a constant battle between shooting in areas of plenty of sun and plenty of shade. Although not the most convenient situation, it kept me on my toes and I enjoyed the challenge against the elements with my camera settings.

Due to the brief nature of the season and the wide variety of weather for games, a full-season Lightroom preset was not created. Instead, a game-by-game system for the preset was used -- doing what we could to keep the photos looking similar, but recognizing a preset for an even overcast day won't yield the same as a harsh contrasting afternoon sun. I think we were successful nonetheless and the photos were well-treated and consistent throughout the game.
