This stainless steel desk was custom made for a 50th birthday gift for a father in New England. Many tables have a metal base and a wood top. We reversed the roles on this project and combined hardwood and steel truss rods to create a sturdy base with a reclaimed stainless steel top from a old commercial kitchen prep table. We backed up the top with 1.5" thick plywood to make a very flat and sturdy surface.

 

The base uses mortise and tenon joinery for added strength. Our customer wanted a dark finish to emphasize the masculine decor of the new office. The combination of an easy to maintain surface and strong base results in a table is very strong and will last generations.
