Gisel Florez Studio is based in NYC and dedicated to maintaining a creative edge shooting high-end still and motion projects for advertising, editorial, and independent labels. Gisel Florez uses the medium of photography and film to explore notions of the sublime, transformation and universal aspects of the human condition. Merging her interests in scientific development within interactions of light and the organic process, Florez incorporates manual camera techniques with conceptual practice to explore the ways in which we are interconnected within the space of existence.
I’m driven by a curiosity to explore light & perception. I am a first-generation Cuban American, born and raised in NJ. Time flew by as I was drawing and painting for most of my childhood. Starting out around 6 years old, my interests resided in nature, collections, scientific experiments, and learning realistic representational oil painting. This was my passion until I broke away from the representational at the Rhode Island School of Design trying out every medium possible. The last decade has focused my attention on photography & movement. Film rolls were the medium in which I started to learn and then went on to complete a final thesis using 4x5 with Henry Horenstein at RISD. I have been running my own company Gisel Florez Studio (GFS) as a still-life focused practice for the past 15 years based in NYC. The love for dynamic stills began during a personal project capturing a Fendi bag on fire in my neighbor's back yard. This was my salute to the corporate lifestyle after establishing the first in-house photo studio for Barneys New York in 2007. Ever since, I've been traversing the line of art & fashion shooting still-life centric images for advertising, editorial, and independent labels. The majority of my work is shot with a digital 4x5 and a Leica. The curiosity of surroundings and existence has always sparked my directions in life. Placing myself at the heart of life’s process has always been the most rewarding. From traveling to areas few have traversed, challenging the physical & mental through marathons or ultras, to being MVP jammer on a roller derby team, to the home births of my two children, to creating a family-run ice cream company in 2016, to expanding into cinematic studies and capture in 2018. There is still so much to learn. Our world has a lot of experience to offer and I am constantly learning. Scientific studies, discoveries, and technological advancements and how they will affect our society usually fill my thoughts. Our human existence is comprised of many elements that I love to sift through and explore. My work is to observe and translate through reflections, refractions, patterns & fractals, all pieces of physical life that organize our visual existence.
